Queer storytelling in Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House
Nadine Lake, Senior Lecturer and Director of Gender Studies at the Centre for Gender and Africa Studies, University of the Free State, South Africa

About the seminar: For this seminar, Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House (2019) is used to challenge a fundamentally heteronormative understanding of the archive. Machado’s unique literary style and her candid narration of domestic violence between herself and another women are explored to understand how memories of trauma play a fundamental role in surfacing an archive of belonging for queer and lesbian women.

About the presenter: Nadine Lake is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Gender Studies at the Centre for Gender and Africa Studies, University of the Free State, South Africa. She is the South African partner to a Sida-project (2018-2022) that focuses on gender mainstreaming and gender-sensitive research practices at the University of Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique. Her research focuses on corrective rape and gender-based violence in South Africa, feminist postcolonial critique, and queer archives.
