Gender and Culture Research Group

Research on Gender and Culture at the Centre includes work on bodies and materialities; medicalised practices; family and kinship as cultural formations; sexualities; re-thinking colonialisms; cross-cultural transformations; textual practices; popular cultural phenomena; gender, culture and technologies; cultures of knowledge; and intersectional feminisms.

The concept of culture is here defined as meaning-making processes and practices that shape the social in the everyday. It is crucially concerned with questions of power, identity and meaning as these emerge in diverse contexts.

Some of our ongoing research projects focus on representations of family in twenty-first century Swedish literature, gendered conditions in recreational sports, assisted reproduction and new family formations, and reconstructive surgery after female genital cutting.
