Young Trans People’s Mental Health – Affective Labour, Cisnormativity and Revisiting the Minority Stress Model

About the seminar: Lgbtq people, and especially trans people, tend to report worse mental health than heterosexual and cis people. This has generally been explained using the minority stress model (Hendricks & Testa 2012, Meyer 2003). In this seminar I will be drawing on interviews with young trans people (16-25 years old) living in Sweden on their mental health, analyzed together with theories on cisnormativity and affective labour. I argue that such theories and analysis can complement the minority stress model. And maybe also challenge parts of it?
About the presenter: Ida Linander is a research fellow in public health, Department of epidemiology and global health, Umeå University and is also affiliated to Umeå Centre for Gender Studies. Ida’s research concerns lgbtq people’s experiences of health and healthcare, sexual and reproductive health, as well as issues of safety and separatism. Currently runs a Forte-financed project on the mental health of young trans people.
