Anachronistic living conditions : dis/ability, possibility and desire in the changeable Swedish welfare state
Christine Bylund, PhD in Ethnology Ubmejen Universithäta (Umeå University)

Since 2009 an austerity trend in support for people with dis/abilities provided by the welfare state has taken place in Sweden. Austerity measures have a great impact on close relationships, rendering people with dis/abilities dependent on their partners, parents or children.

This presentation aims to examine the connections between the changing welfare state, desire and relationships through a crip-theoretical understanding of ableism as a hegemonic discourse producing a bio-political system that safe-guards the lives and desires of those understood as abled-bodied.
